How to Create a New Partition on Windows 7

You can create a new partition easily on Windows 7 by the apply of Disk Management tool. Disk management tool provides you a simple interface for managing partitions and volumes. Now I will  discuss and share you how to create the partition.

Step 1:

Firstly you need to open the Disk Management Console by typing the: diskmgmt.msc on run option, and the run option you find by pressing: Windows+R on the keyboard.

Step 2:

Now you will show the Disk Management's Graphical view. Now, Right click on a free/ unallocated area and then click New Simple Volume. This will starts the New simple volume wizard.

Step 3:

Now please Read the welcome page and after that click Next.

Step 4:

The specify Volume Size page specifies you the minimum size and maximum size for the volume in MB and lets you size the volume within this Limits and than click next.

Step 5:

Now the next page, you will see the Assign Drive or Path. Specify whether you wants to assign a drive letter or Path and than click next button.

Assign The Following Drive Letter- Select the available drive letter in the selection list provided. By default Windows selects  the lowest available drive letter and excludes reserved drive letters as well as those assigned to local disks or network drive.

Mount in the Following Emptys NTFS Folder- Choose the options to mount the partition in an empty NTFS file. You must need to type the path to an existing file or click Browse to search for or create a folder for to use.

Do Not Assign A Drive Letter or Drive Path- This option choose you to create the partition without assigning a drive letter or path. Later if you want the partition to be available for storage, you can assign a drive letter or path once at a time.

Step 6:

Now use the format partition page to determine whether and how the volume should be formatted. If you format the volume, chose Format This Volume with following Settings and next configure the following options.

File System- Set the file system as FAT, FAT32 or NTFS. NTFS is selected by default in most cases. If you create a file system as FAT or FAT32 , you can later convert it to NTFS by using convert utility. But you cannot convert NTFS partition to FAT or FAT32.

Allocation Unit Size- In here you will set the cluster size for the file system. This is the basic unit in which disk space is allocated. The default allocation unit size is based on the size of volume and/ or set dynamically prior of formatting. So, to override the feature , you can set the allocation unit size to a specific value. If, you already use many small files , and you might want to use a smaller cluster size , like - 512 or 1024 bytes, and in this settings, small files use less disk space.

Volume Label- Setting a text label for the partition. this labels is the partitions volume name and by default is set to new volume. You also can change the volume label at any time by right clicking the volume in windows explorer, choose properties and typing a new value in the labeled field provide on the General Tab.

Perform a Quick Format- This tells Windows 7 to format without checking any partition errors, with a large partitions this options can save your valuable time. However, it is usually better for checking the errors, which will enable the Disk Management to mark bad sectors on the disk and also lock them out.

Enable File and Folder Compression- This will turns on compression for your disk. Built in compression is available only for NTFS. And under NTFS compression is transparent to the users and compressed files can be accessed like your regular files and folders. If you select this options files and directions on this drive will be compressed automatically.

Step 7:

Now click on the Next button to confirm your options and after that click Finish.

The windows 7 Disk Management tool will show the space configured as a new partition.

Thanks for your patience and enjoy with your new partition.
